Puzzle Strike is a digital adaptation of a physical board game published by Sirlin Games in 2012. Puzzle Strike was developed by the lead designer of Street Fighter HD Remix, who was also a long-time fighting game tournament player.
Puzzle Strike simulates a puzzle video game such as Puzzle Fighter or Tetris and is based in the universe of one of Sirlin's other games Yomi. The game utilizes the cast of fighter's from Yomi and as such each plays differently with a unique style. The goal of the game is "crash" your gems, breaking them apart and sending them to your opponents side, with the first player to end a turn with ten or more gems losing the game.
The chief play mechanic of the game is deck building, only instead of cards the game utilizes chips marked with certain actions or abilities. In the physical version the chips are drawn from a bag, this random chip drawing is of course simulated in the app versions. Every turn you must buy a chip to add to your deck, even if it is a wound. The key aspect of deck building is balancing the the available resources in the game; money, crash gems, combines and puzzle chips. These strategies vary with each of the ten "base set" fighter characters that come with the base game. Ten more fighter characters referred to as the "Shadows" are available as a single dlc package, rounding out the character roster to the full set of 20 from the original Yomi. Note that the game is completely playable with the base set of ten characters, and that the dlc characters exist to add more variety and variation for players who play the game a lot. There is a nice power balance between characters and no pay to win elements in the game.
Puzzle Strike is a unique combination of puzzle and fighting game wrapped around an excellently realized deck building mechanic. The digital implementation features an interactive tutorial as well as single player versus ai or online ranked and unranked competitive play. The game has been widely well received in the board gaming community, as well as receiving good reviews on the app store and "Mosty Positive" ratings on Steam.
