Shadowrun Hong Kong Kickstarter
Hair Brained Schemes have launched a Kickstarter for their third major Shadowrun title. After successfully kickstarting two previous Shadowrun games, the campaign for Shadowrun Hong Kong took off like a rocket and funded almost instantly. As of this posting the project has gathered nearly $700,000.00 with 22 days to go, well beyond the funding goal of $100,000.00.
The Shadowrun Universe is steeped in rich lore dating back to its pen and paper roll playing game origins over 25 years ago. Since its inception a vast mythos has been built through hundreds of RPG source books, novels, video games and more. The resulting setting is a dystopian future where magic has re-manifested its self in the modern world creating an original mix of classic fantasy tropes and cyberpunk futurism. The Shadowrun Primer (9mb pdf) is a good place to start and a good read even for those who may not be interested in the game its self.
The Hair Brained Schemes series of Shadowrun video games play from a 3/4 top down isometric perspective. The games have been almost universally praised for taking some old school western rpg sensibilities and wrapping them in new technology. Control of a party with turn based combat and a well written story driven narrative create an enthralling gaming experience that harkens back to the classic pc rpgs. All of the titles include editors that the Shadowrun player community use to great effect to re-create classic Shadowrun pnp modules or to create all new stories and adventures. Unlike the previous titles, Shadowrun Hong Kong will not be available on tablets, and instead will be exclusive to PC, in order to remove the technical limitations imposed by having to support a range of portable devices.
A digital copy of Shadowrun Hong Kong can be had at the $15 pledge level. If the project hits the $1,000,000.00 stretch goal (which seems likely), all backers at this level and above will receive an additional Hong Kong mini-campaign for free. More details are available in the standard kickstarter sales pitch video linked below:
