Lords of Waterdeep is a digital adaptation of an original board game released by Fantasy Flight Games in 2012 to critical acclaim. Based in the Forgotton Realms campaign setting of the Dungeons & Dragons gaming universe, players assume the rolls of mysterious masked lords vying for control of the city of Waterdeep.

At the beginning of a game of Lords of Waterdeep players select or randomly draw a card representing one of the lords of the city. Which lord each player is playing remains hidden until the end of the game. Each lord has two hidden additional objectives they can complete for bonus victory points, the scoring mechanism used to win the game. The game then proceeds for eight rounds of four turns each. The game plays out like a euro-style worker placement game, where each turn players take turns placing their worker pieces on the board. Each space on the board can only be used by one player per turn, and reward its occupant with a variety of boons such as resources or units to complete quests, additional quests, or intrigue cards. Most quest objectives are met by completing specific set collections of items or units available in the game for occupying locations on the game board. Intrigue cards have ranging effects, some of which can benefit other players as well as the one playing the card. Players continue through the duration of the game attempting to gain the most victory points through the games various scoring mechanisms, and through bonuses rewarded in the scoring phase at the end of the game for completing quests, hidden objectives and for remaining unused resources.

The digital implementation of Lords of Waterdeep is beautifully realized and sets the standards for app conversions of cardboard games, as is the case with many Playdek Games titles. The game board, graphics, music, sounds, user interface, and more come together perfectly to capture the experience of playing the original award-winning board game. The digital version features a rule book, card gallery and a highly touted interactive tutorial that does a great job of teaching new players the ropes. The game can be played by 1-5 human and ai players pass and play or online both asynchronous and real-time with selectable game clocks. Other features include match making, player rankings, multiple player profiles, next game and rematch buttons and much more. Expansions from the physical game such as "Undermountain" and "Scoundrels of Skullport" are also available and can be bought within the game as in-app purchases.
