Reiner Knizia’s The Confrontation

Off World Games have announced a kickstarter for a digital conversion of Reiner Knizia’s Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, minus the LOTR license entitled Reiner Knizia’s The Confrontation.

While the license will not be used the fantasy theme will of course remain using more generalized tropes. The game play is unchanged with the exception of 18 additional characters that are being added as the focus of this kickstarter campaign. Reiner Knizia’s The Confrontation will be available for PC, Mac, and iPad, featuring local AI opponents and realtime online multiplayer. The game is set to retail at $9.99 for iOS and $19.99 for desktop with the 18 additional characters expansion being available as dlc for $6.99 and $9.99 respectively, contributors to the kickstarter will receive this expansion as well as beta access in April on some devices.

Reiner Knizia's The Confrontation has been released for Windows and Mac systems on Steam. The game features a tutorial mode, single player skirmishes versus ai as well as cross platform multiplayer. As someone who participated in the game's kickstarter and beta testing, I am pleased with the amount of polish developers Offworld Games have put into the final product. The end result is a great digital version of the board game with nice production values in the form of slick animations and sounds. In addition to the classic mode of play, several characters exclusive to the digital version have been developed featuring unique abilities that add new strategic play methods to the original game. Additional versions of the game are slated to be released for mobile platforms in the future.

The kickstarted digital implementation of Reiner Knizia's The Confrontation has been released for iOS, joining the previously released PC and Mac versions released on Steam. Reiner Knizia's The Confrontation is a digital port created by Offworld Games that lacks the Lord of the Rings theme of the original board game for licensing reasons, but the actual play mechanics of the game remain intact. The iOS version supports two player live multiplayer or single player versus ai and is available for iPads at the price of $9.99. More information about the game is available in the original post.

A turn-based strategy game pitting two players of Light and Shadow against each other with asymmetric forces and hidden units.

For Light to be victorious, the player must sneak the Prince to the Shadow Stronghold. Shadow, on the other hand, is tasked with finding and defeating the Prince (Or moving 3 characters into the Light Capital).

Like many of Reiner’s designs, The Confrontation can be played casually between beginners or as deeply as master level chess: it’s up to you and your opponents!
